Healthy, Low-Effort Winter Meals
With plenty of fruit and vegetable options in season, eating well in warmer months can be easier. But what about the colder months?
If lower temperatures and shorter days have you craving starchy comfort foods, you’re not imaging things. We tend to want richer, heartier meals in the winter because it’s colder and darker. Our brains look for serotonin in the form of comforting meals, while our bodies seek extra calories to warm us up.
The good news is that you can eat balanced, nutritious meals in the winter that still offer cozy comfort – and they don’t have to be complicated.
First, let’s talk about what to look for in a meal.
Basic nutrition for older adults
The guidance for older adults and nutrition is essentially the same as it is for any age group: eat a balanced blend of whole foods from key categories. That includes:
- Plenty of fruits and vegetables in a rainbow of colors
- Fiber-rich foods like beans and nuts
- Good protein like lean meats, seafood, and eggs
- Hearty whole grains, such as oatmeal and brown rice
- Low-fat or fat-free dairy sources, especially ones with vitamin D and calcium
Other advice includes staying hydrated and avoiding empty calories.
Always check with your doctor before changing up your diet. If you have specific needs, like diabetic concerns or high blood pressure, you may need more or less of certain types of foods.
But generally speaking, good nutrition simply means getting more whole foods into your diet to support your overall health.
